Brackets Beam Structure: Transforming Rooftops into Functional Spaces

A Technical Solution by Dalia Sadany

Cairo, Egypt - With the increasing demand for residential and commercial space in the crowded city of Cairo, many rooftops remain unused or turned into storage areas. However, architect Dalia Sadany has come up with an innovative design solution to transform these spaces into more effective and functional areas. The Brackets Beam Structure not only rehabilitates rooftops but also incorporates sustainable features, making it a unique and versatile design.

The Brackets Beam Structure is a technical solution that adapts to the existing building structure, providing a multi-functional space that can be used for various purposes. One of its standout features is the use of solar heating to conserve electricity. The structure incorporates shutters between the brackets, which transmit heat to pipes inside, heating the water and reducing the need for traditional heating methods.

Not only does the Brackets Beam Structure serve a practical purpose, but it also adds aesthetic value to the interior space. The design allows for cladding in different materials and finishes, making it a versatile element that can be incorporated into various design styles. Additionally, the structure can be used as furniture accents such as countertops, tables, and partitions, further enhancing the functionality and visual appeal of the space.

The Brackets Beam Structure is made using IPE steel sections, which function as both beams and columns. The structure also features tracks that hold the solar heater tubes, acting as shutters to regulate the intensity of the sun internally. The double glass layers, reinforced to withstand wind, rain, and snow, glide between the brackets, providing additional insulation and protection.

Customization is a key aspect of the Brackets Beam Structure. The shutters, including the thermal solar tubes, are available in different sizes and lengths to adapt to different spaces. The width of the glass is equal to the width between the spans of the brackets, ensuring a seamless and cohesive design. The track and valve system is functional for any dimension, allowing for flexibility in design and usage.

The Brackets Beam Structure offers a unique interaction with the environment. The shutters' motion across the beam creates different kinds of illumination and shades, depending on the angle of the sun, season, and geographical location. This not only provides shade and regulates the temperature inside but also reduces the need for fan coils and air conditioners. The structure beams can also be utilized as furniture pieces, offering additional functionality and adaptability.

The development of the Brackets Beam Structure took extensive research and collaboration. The design team faced challenges in creating a modulated structure that could provide an open space adaptable to various needs while incorporating a moving shutter system and a solar heating system. Through innovative solutions and automated valve mechanisms, they were able to achieve a globally functional structure that fulfills economic, environmental, and structural intentions.

Since its introduction in 2013, the Brackets Beam Structure has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and technical expertise, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

The Brackets Beam Structure is not just a design solution; it is a testament to the power of innovation and creativity in transforming unused spaces into functional and sustainable environments. With its unique features and adaptability, this design has the potential to revolutionize rooftop utilization worldwide.
